A useful lighting plan is easier to understand when each light source has a clear job. Ambient, task and accent layers can overlap, but they should not be treated as interchangeable labels.
Ambient light
Ambient light supports general movement and orientation. It may come from ceiling fixtures, wall light or indirect sources.
Task light
Task light is placed for a specific activity such as reading, food preparation or desk work. Position it to reduce shadows and avoid reflected glare.
Accent light
Accent light directs attention to architecture, art or texture. It should support the room rather than compete with every other visual element.
Review the result
Test the plan after dark, use dimming where compatible, and check the actual task surfaces. More light is not always the answer; better placement may solve the problem.
